Grandma’s cook book

Reading this post today really inspired me.

For Christmas 2006 my Grandma gave me a book with a collection of some of her favorite recipes on lovely handwritten index cards. She also got my Mom and my Great Aunt (known for her legendary cinnamon buns!) to contribute some recipes, as well as lots of blank cards for me to add to it as I go.

This is hands down the best Christmas present I have ever received, rivaled only by the nutcracker Santa brought me when I was five. I love having physical copies of generations worth of recipes that I can leaf through and pick out at leisure. I know that they are all tried and true recipes, nothing fussy, just good old-fashioned home cooking.

Don’t get me wrong I am a huge food blog fan as well. I could get lost in delicious food porn, and I have bookmark folders full of recipes I’m dying to try from some of my favorite food bloggers. But so much of that is just gluttony, lusting after one exotic flavor to the next mouth-watering picture, and after a good hour of blog hopping I end up with yet another folder full of bookmarks that I rarely ever get around to testing out.

But when I do find that one really hit recipe that friends and family adore, I always make sure to write it down on an index card for future reference, lest it be lost in the blogosphere forever. I hope that by the time I have a grandchild I will have my own arsenal of family tested recipes to hand down.

Here is a recipe from my grandmothers collection:

Chicken Cacciatore                 Serves 4 (very hungry people)

3 lbs. Chicken pieces

1/4 Cup olive oil

1 Large onion sliced thin

2 Cloves garlic chopped fine

1/3 Cup tomato paste

3/4 Cup white wine

3/4 Cup chicken broth

1 Teaspoon salt

1/4 Teaspoon pepper

1/4 Teaspoon thyme

1/4 Teaspoon marjoram

1/2 Teaspoon basil

1 Bay lead

2 Small tomatoes seeded and chopped

1 Cup sliced mushrooms

1 Large green pepper seeded and cut into thin strips

* Note: to seed tomato, cut in half and gently squeeze

In a large fry pan brown chicken on hot olive oil until golden brown. Add onion and garlic. Combine next nine ingredients  pour over chicken, cover and simmer for 35 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add tomatoes, mushrooms, and green pepper. Cover and continue to cook for 20 minutes. Serve with pasta.
